Tree Lopping, Cutting & Tree Surgery by Qualified Arborists
Arborista Trees provides tree lopping, tree cutting and tree surgery across Canberra, Queanbeyan and the surrounding region. Whatever you call it, the job is the same: safely cutting back branches that are too big, too close to your house or too risky to leave. Our experienced arborists are the tree surgeons Canberra homeowners call when a tree has outgrown its space. For routine shaping and maintenance, see our tree trimming and pruning service. If a tree is beyond saving, we also provide tree removal and stump grinding.
Common Tree Lopping and Cutting Jobs
- Branches overhanging roofs, gutters, fences, sheds and driveways.
- Dead, split or storm-damaged limbs that could fall.
- Oversized trees that need a crown reduction to a safe, manageable size.
- Trees growing close to power lines or buildings.
- Branches blocking light, views or access.

Tree Lopping Done Properly, Not Topping
Cutting a tree back is sometimes necessary, but how it is done matters. Cutting a tree or its main stem back to an arbitrary point (known as topping) leaves weak, fast regrowth and gives decay an entry point. It is also the opposite of good practice under AS4373. When we cut back a tree, we cut to a suitable lateral branch or the branch collar, take only what the tree can cope with, and keep its natural shape. Read our guide to pruning to Australian Standards for more detail.
Sometimes cutting back is not the right answer. If a tree is dead, badly decayed or structurally unsound, removal is usually the safer choice. Some trees in the ACT are also protected, so we check for council requirements during the assessment. See our guide to council approval for tree work in Canberra.
We cut across Canberra and nearby areas including Tuggeranong, Belconnen, Gungahlin, Weston Creek, Woden Valley, Queanbeyan, Yass and Murrumbateman.

Our Tree Lopping Process

Free Quote & Assessment
We look at the tree, the access and anything nearby such as roofs, fences or power lines, then explain exactly what we will cut and why.
Planned Cuts
Each cut is chosen before we start, back to a suitable branch or collar, so the tree keeps a natural shape and heals well.
Controlled Cutting
Branches are cut and brought down in a controlled way, using ropes and rigging where the job needs it, so your property stays protected.
Clean-Up
Branches and debris are chipped on-site for mulch or removed entirely, and the area is left clean.

Tree Lopping FAQs
In everyday Australian use, lopping means cutting branches back. Pruning is the same job done to a standard: cuts are made back to a suitable branch or the branch collar so the tree heals and regrows properly. We do the second kind. We do not top trees, because cutting a tree back to stubs leaves weak regrowth and opens the tree to decay.
Yes. In Australia “tree surgeon” and “arborist” describe the same trade: a trained professional who climbs, prunes, cuts back and removes trees. Our arborists handle tree lopping, tree cutting, crown reduction, deadwooding, tree removal and stump grinding across Canberra and surrounding areas.
The price depends on the height of the tree, how much needs cutting, access to the site, whether power lines are nearby and how much clean-up is needed. We quote after seeing the tree, so call 0423 190 077 for a free on-site quote. Our guide to tree removal costs in Canberra explains what drives pricing.
It depends on the tree. In the ACT some trees are protected and need approval before major pruning or removal. We check for protections during our assessment and can advise on the next step. Our guide to council approval for tree work in Canberra covers the basics.
